In the taproom another man-at-arms guarded the door to the street and the innkeeper stood in the doorway to the kitchen nervously wringing his hands. He looked at me apologetically as I passed. Dawnmaster Tomar sat at a table near the fire drinking wine from a goblet. He was a young man for someone in his position, not yet thirty. His ringleted black hair and beard were glossy and obviously well cared for and he no doubt thought himself well favoured. Tonight he was wearing dark street clothes instead of his formal cloth-of-gold robes but around his neck hung the solid gold sunburst medallion of his office. It was not surprising that he travelled with so many guards; he was wearing a small fortune.

"About time," he said, throwing the dregs of his wine into the fire. He put down the cup and looked at me with an appraising eye. Then he looked at Loremaster Milos, who shook his head at some unvoiced question.

"Would you care for a drink?" Without waiting for my answer, he turned in the direction of the kitchen and said "Innkeep, bring us another goblet and some more wine. And make it better than that last muck."

"Not for me," I said sharply and then in a more friendly tone, "I do not drink wine this late. I find I do not sleep well if I do. Now, to what do I owe this late night visit?"

He smiled back. "Forgive me, I thought I had said. How lax of me. I am looking for the Aiedan Priestess named Nessa Hilgar. I need to find her urgently."

"She is not here," I said and waited.

"I know that," he said and then forced a smile back on his face and asked, "Do you know where she is?"

"She left some time ago," I said, avoiding the question.

"Not according to our good innkeeper here," Tomar said, indicating the nervous man standing near the kitchen, who was studiously avoiding my eyes. "He assures me that the Priestess arrived here early this night and swears that she has not left."

"We both know that is not true," I said looking at Milos. "Your magus here has no doubt already ascertained that she is not in the building." I was taking a calculated risk by demoting Milos to a simple servant. I was hoping that his pride and misgivings about the situation would spark some sort of reaction that I might be able to use. Tomar seemed far too sure of himself.

"My good Lady! Please. This is no simple sorcerer. This is Loremaster Milos, high priest of Donai, and his concerns here go far beyond those of a missing Priestess." He then tempered his tone and continued, "However, we are hoping that by finding our missing Priestess we can also answer some of those concerns."

Damn the man, I could see why he had risen so fast so young, he was quite the politician. I would have no help from Milos. Tomar had established him as one of the instigators of this matter.
